Spaying and Neutering Your Dog

February 5, 2010 · Leave a Comment

I read an interesting article from my friend and fellow veterinarian Dr. Karen Becker on her blog/website – Mercola Healthy Pets – This One Procedure Could Reduce Your Pet’s Lifespan by Over 30% The article is based on a study done by the Gerald P. Murphy Cancer Foundation in which David Waters, DVM and others discovered that female Rottweilers that kept their ovaries for at least 6 years were 4 times more likely to have exceptional longevity. After reading this article I am not ready to jump ship and say that I am not going to spay or neuter anymore. I agree with Dr. Becker in that... [Read the full story]

How often should my dog have a chiropractic treatment?

December 18, 2009 · 1 Comment

A very common question for me – How often should my dog have chiropractic  treatment? In fact @KempEquine asked the question via Twitter (@Dr_Dan_DVM) this morning. To which I answered with the great all encompassing cop out answer – it depends. It depends on why you are doing chiropractic treatment for your dog. Chiropractic is a technique, a tool, to use to help correct biomechanical and neurological problems; however it is also an entire medical system used to help the body’s ability to heal and to stay healthy. A healthy spine will in fact help maintain a healthy body. So... [Read the full story]

Anterior Cruciate Rupture in two dogs

May 10, 2008 · Leave a Comment

On Saturday the clinic was very busy. We had our scheduled appointments along with two emergencies. Those two emergencies were limping dogs, which ended up being anterior cruciate ligament ruptures or cranial cruciate ligament ruptures. The first dog I had seen before with the same limp unfortunately now it had gotten worse. My initial visit with the dog, a 100 lb Bullmastiff, he was still using the leg but had a noticeable limp on the right hind. Palpation and flexion showed minor discomfort in the knee. Attempts to exhibit a drawer sign on the dog were met with a relatively painful but stable... [Read the full story]

MicroChipping your dog: A Big Brother program

November 11, 2009 · 1 Comment

Microchipping your dog is a Big Brother program I can definitely agree with. Injection of a small electronic chip into your dog is an excellent way to have it permanently identified. Now it is not without its problems, but the rewards outweigh the rare risks. Healthwise there are minimal complications except for migration of the chip to other areas of the body other than behind the shoulder blades. This does not seem to cause any complications except for trying to locate the chip with a scanner. One complication to be concerned about is the rare occurrence of the chip being broken when being inserted... [Read the full story]

Raw Food Diet – Dogs should not eat kibble

February 28, 2008 · Leave a Comment

OK I have been asked to find more appropriate holistic in nature advertisers and products to promote for this website, as I have had some complaints about some of the advertisers. Well I will tell you, it has been very difficult to find. However I have found one today that many of you that do not feed raw need to read. I feed my dogs raw, as well as kibble, because it is healthier for them. I am not a straight raw feeder mostly for convenience and some because I want the best of both worlds. It is very healthy to feed raw because it provides my dogs with missing micronutrients and other more natural... [Read the full story]

Allergies and Vaccines

November 9, 2009 · 2 Comments

Is this a description of your dog? She has been biting her sides, paws, tail, anything she can get her mouth to and creating red, bald spots, some to the point of bleeding. These are along the sides of her body and on her tail. The last time she had all of her shots she got so sick she threw up blood and bile. This was part of an email I received from a family member that does not live in the same state that I do and obviously she sees a different veterinarian. She is “due” for her yearly vaccinations. Nevermind my problem with receiving annual vaccinations, my first question was what... [Read the full story]

Underwater Treadmill

One of my clients has an Alaskan Malmute named Moab. I have been seeing Moab for a couple of years now. He has a bad hip and some other areas of arthritis, so he has been coming in on a routine basis for chiropractic adjustments. He sees Dr. Karen Becker for his other holistic care that he needs. Well last month I noticed that he was starting to decline,... Read more of this article
